Lightning MTS 225 with TIG Package
When the very first MIG, TIG, Stick unit with AC/DC Pulse TIG capability series splashed on the market back in late 2016, it sent our competitors scrambling to come up with a competitive product. Now, in its third generation, the Lightning 225 MTS features upgrades to both performance and programming. Those familiar with the old unit can see that the unit has radically changed from the previous Lightning series. The unit now features a new bezel, panel layout and a 5.1" HD TFT LCD screen. The Lighting 225 MTS, alongside its big brother the Lightning 275MTS, continues to lead the industry in product innovation with a full spectrum of new, user-oriented features.
The Lighting 225 MTS excels in nearly every category when compared to similar competitor products, boasting 225A maximum output when operating in MIG and TIG modes. The new one-page design of the LCD screen programming allows the user to see all the settings at a glance. There's no scrolling through endless pages to make adjustments or confusing pop-up menus to wade through. The user has all parameters relating to the process condensed onto a single easy-to-read menu screen. This design also allows intuitive navigation and selection of parameters with the use of simple directional buttons on the panel.
The improved PowerSET function allows the customer to enter basic operating parameters such as wire diameter and plate thickness in MIG, TIG, or Stick mode which in turn automatically provides ball park settings for the user for most applications. The PowerSET mode offers preset settings of many values that are adjustable in manual mode. The Volts and Wire Feed Speed/ Amps are adjustable in case the settings provided don't exactly fit the application. (Volts are only adjustable in MIG and Flux-Cored Modes.)
This new unit also features a separate Flux-Core mode for operation with most common types of Flux Core wire (without gas/self shielding). For Aluminum welding the unit can now be equipped with several different models of push-pull guns in addition to a heavy-duty Parker DSP 360A spool gun. Separate Ar/CO2 mixed-gas and 100% CO2 modes help improve overall performance as well on steel. As powerful as the welder is, it is also capable of operating on 120V if the unit needs to be carried to the job site. As far as the operating on 240V, at the full rated 225A output, the TIG function features a duty cycle of 35% on AC or DC. In stick mode, the with output at the full 185A output the duty cycle is 35%, with a 60% rating at 160A, perfect for most 1/8" and 5/32" electrodes. At the maximum rated 225 amp output, the MIG function also features 35% duty cycle. For MIG, that means 1/4" and 5/16" welds are a breeze. Even 3/8" and 1/2" can be easily handled with multiple passes.
As for portability around the shop, be sure to add the PowerCart 330. It features heavy duty capability, supporting use with gas cylinders up to full-size 9" diameter cylinders. If you choose the stackable cooler option (the PowerCool 400), be sure to order the water-cooled torch package for this welder.
