Comparison Chart?

When I started shopping I was looking for the most features for my money, and in all honesty, if I could have got all the features the 256 has in a 200 amp machine I would have bought it.

Enough rambling. A old employer is looking for a tig machine to weld aluminum for his kit plane project. He is dead set on a diversion 165. He is a lil upset that he has to pay extra for a pedal. So I invited him over to try my 256 out, and I'm thinking the PT200 is what he should look at? or the PT225?

So maybe a comparison chart would be in order?

Thank you, but I was actually looking for something comparing it to the other makes.

He still has a problem with Chinese built stuff, even though many things in his garage are from Harbor Freight.

I was thinking the pt200 as it seemed to be in the same range as the 165, and comes with a pedal.

Even on the best day, the Diversion is 1200.00 or thereabouts. PT 200 is still cheaper and tax is not charged unless it is in CA.

If we created a comparison chart, it would be against the Dynasty or the Invertec, or TA products, and even the ESAB caddy tigs.

Even though the 200 is lower in specs, many of them do compete favorably, when compared to the equivalent Dynasty, including duty cycle, Max, Min, Amps and features like AC frequency.

Doesn't matter anyway, there was a D165 new never used on craigslist for 900 obo, and we talked him down to 700.

On a side note, he loved my 256 :D

Slick beware that the Miller warranty doesn't transfer.

I didn't sell him either. He was dead set on the 165, we use to have a Dynasty 200 at work.

So I looked on Craigslist for tig welders, and low an behold there was one.

He was amazed that the 256 didn't look like all the other Chinese welders. So props for the cosmetic changes.

He made jokes about the color, and the name, but then we plugged it in and started melting metal.

He couldn't believe that it could do all that it could, and do it well. We used the cutter to slice up a truck frame so he could haul it away. But before he did, we ground some spots and ran beads with the stick, then some tig.

Then we got a scrap plate of aluminum and ran some beads, played with the settings, and so on.

He wants to see how it holds up, he also was hesitant to believe there was a 5 year warranty, and if you'd stand behind it.

In the same breath, he wasn't worried about the Miller warranty. He did get it for half price, so its his call.

I would wager that if the 165 on Craigslist didn't show up, he would have ordered a PT200. He may still, he has a habit of turning things for a profit.

I'll just say this much, for a lil more then what I almost paid for a plasma cutter, with a "once its out the door, its yours" return policy.

I'll say I'm very pleased.

The 165 MIGHT do 3/16 on an exceptionally hot day. I have heard a lot of people complaining they just can't get the performance out of them. Some are swapping for the new 185. Duty cycle is terrible though....around 10 percent at rated amps on the 165 or thereabouts...I have seen it listed at 15% though recently.

Eh, he had his mind set on it, and the one on Craigslist showed up, not much I could do besides tie him up!

If it doesn't work out, Im sure something green is in his future.
