Powertig 225 LX display erratic in pulse mode

Hi I've had my 225 LX for about a month and a half and I've just gotten around to trying the pulse mode. When I turn the pulse switch on the display starts displaying a series of random numbers and I can't tell what my amps are set at. I thought maybe it was showing me all of the pulse setting one after the other but the numbers keep changing randomly so that doesn't seem like what it is doing. Has anyone else had this issue? Any help would be appreciated. I'm wilding steel and am in DCEN if that helps. Thanks

We have several threads dedicated to this question as they are repeated regularly...and it's also in the new manuals. Do you have a new style? I wasn't aware they were out. It's almost the same as the 250EX now...if there isn't a new 225 manual up, use that one and just minus the start and end amps and top end pulse frequency...everything else is similar.

But to repeat it again:

There's no way to make the unit cycle 250 times per second if the pulse frequency is 250 and have it reflect in the display. What you see is perfectly normal. The display "samples" the output of the pulse at a different frequency of the pulse, so it may sample the pulse while its rising, falling or even at the bottom of the top. It's not random, but to your mind it may appear that way. There's no way to make those sync up. If the display cycled 250 times per second, you wouldn't see anything but 888 likely. When setting the pulse after it is first turned on, you have several seconds in which to set the pulse before the display starts cycling. If you go beyond that default time, you have two choices. 1) Turn it off and then back on to finish setting, 2) Turn pulse frequency to a minimum and the display will cycle slowly enough to register. For me, I just set pulse to a minimum to start with and adjust pulse frequency last.

Sorry about the reposting of a familiar thread, I did try to search the forum for this problem but came up empty. I guess I haven't got the swing of how to use the search engine effectively yet. It's good to know that this is not a malfunction of the display. The pulse function has been working fine and is a great help in welding this steel mesh without blowing it out. I don't think I have a 'new style', mine is an analog model. I looked at the manual but it did not give any information about how the display functioned in pulse mode. The manual is for several of the models including the 250 EX. Anyway I'm happy with the welder and slowly getting my feet wet with its different functions. Thanks again.

No, the new units are analog as well. But do you have the new case design? A new 225lx SHOULD look like this if it is from the new shipment. And the link to the new 250ex manual is here on our website:

Mine is the older model without the plastic cover on the front. Thanks for the link to the new manual, it seems to have a lot more information.

Did you buy it used or as a refurb? That model hasn't been around since 2009. Didn't you say you just got it?

I got it through Amazon. They didn't advertise it as a refurb or an old model. Now I feel like I got ripped off.

It's a good unit, but our website shows the model even with the older plastic panel design which we had from 2009-2012.

Even if you have an older model the unit should be in full warranty.

I think he is talking about the clear plastic knob cover that is new to 2013 models, not the plastic bezel. Amazon still shows the 2012 models in many photographs, but they are often slow to update the photos and will often ship newer models. Even the Everlast website still shows the 2012 pictures for that model.

As to what is actually shipping, you would have to inquire with Oleg for Everlast HQ, and the various 3rd party warehouses as to what they have. One nice thing about Amazon is you can always exchange it or return it if you are not happy.

That's because the last I heard the 225lx new models were not available yet. He said he had a metal cover.

Mine looks like the one in the link. So maybe it is just the 2012 model.

We are dropping 225LX will have 20pc in 2 weeks and LX will be history !

amazon does have older model units in stock ..

My guess would be demand. It seems that most people either buy the 200DX or 250EX. And with new models like the 210 and 255 EXT in the lineup, it makes for a lot of TIG models from 200 -250 amps. In addition, new features added to the 200DX, in the last few years, have brought it close to or beyond the 225LX. The only surprising thing is going ahead with the 2013 update right before dropping it. Maybe those will be the rare collector's items someday. ;)

Makes sense to me. The offerings are getting a little crowded, and I imagine the 315LX has a pretty decent margin compared to the 225LX. The only thing I'm worried about is that they'll loose their client base who has Scottish heritage. You know, you want enough welding current, but not toooo much welding current. :)
