As in your pics. 5356 sucks compared to 4043. I had no luck running 5356 with my little 140e. However, the 4043 was a dream. Also, if you have the right setting you should get no soot. I believe "Jody" (tips and tricks) mention soot is a "burn mixture" problem. I agree. Here is an unretouched pic of 4043 .035 @30cfh.

Looks like the wire feed speed...3/64 would have a "lower" WFS than .035...If ur gettin 350 out of it...3/64 is around 380 ish....Maybe you could get closer..????? Worth a try if you jst gta run 5356...350 looked better than the other two attempts....

That's the problem, it never gets better. I've been through ever setting in small steps several times until I gave up. 5356 never got better.

What Im saying is..The third weld...(farthest left}..Theres a bead..small but way more than the other two which looks like the wire vaporized before it got there....With the bigger wire..your WFS is close to your machines max WFS...If your 350.....The bigger dia wire might get you where you need to be WFS wise.....Am I explaining this right??

I know what you're saying but I have a good bit more wire speed and I get the same result with larger wire. I have .035 and .045 in both alloys and two brands. 5356 never got better than the far left weld, no matter the wire size, speed, volts or argon flow and I went through it meticulously. I was filling my shop with aluminum smoke over and over. I quit the spool gun before I damaged myself and tig welded my boat stringers with 5356 filler.
The 250p wire feed speed measures a little over 410ipm but Mark says you can't get an accurate reading that way due to the machine giving the wire feed more power when you start welding.
The wire speed display gives you a reference number to adjust by and switches to actual welding amps while welding.
