Thread: tig torch defect alert!

  1. Default tig torch defect alert!

I was trying my 2016 250ex out today for the first time on tig and I put a 3/32 tungsten in the torch head. I happen to notice that the back cap that clamps the tungsten in place was not letting the O-ring seal against the torch body. The tungsten was clamping before the O-ring was inside the head. I had to chuck all the collets that came with the machine up in my lathe and cut about 3/32 of an inch off the back part of the collets. I ordered a gas lense kit from ebay and all the collets that came with that kit were already shorter so they would seal. Any of you that have been having trouble with shielding better look at the collets.

Thanks for posting! I had a similar issue. The oring would seal, but barely. I decided to follow your advice by shortening the collet and it fits much better now.

At worst that would be a collet defect not a "torch defect".

    No,
Neither would be a defect. There are always a couple of extra threads cut into the collet body threads. If you screw them all the way up, then they will do that. Our torches are not unique in that as I've seen it in other brands. Leave it a little loose and it will all work fine.

If that is not a defect I do not know what a defect is. I have been on this forum for about 2 years, not once has this been brought up on any of the threads about people having problems with shielding. It does not matter who else is having the problem, if it is known it should have been addressed. I have been welding all my life and I have had jobs where almost all I do is tig weld and I have never come across this problem before ever. Call it what ever you want it is still a problem and I am sure more than one has blamed their machine and spent wasted time searching for what is wrong.

The fact that I purchased another product from somewhere else that did not have this problem proves that it is a defect.

I will say I have a lot of respect for Everlast as a company that they do not just delete these threads about problems. I have been on other forums for some brands that shall remain nameless where anything negative is deleted and no improvements are made at all.
