Because it's always been that way. To order you have to be registered if I remember right.

Very odd, as the forum recognizes your credentials. What is on the home page, or any other part of the site for that matter (besides the forum), that is user specific?

I don't know, I just noticed the log in there when the forum log in wasn't working.
