200dx not turning off, the arc keeps on going, got to turn off main power switch...

Got a 200dx, I am in Australia. Welding ally. Std torch. On a semi regular basis now, the torch will not turn off.

Put it down on top of the double folded over leather blanket today and the little fu**er was arcing through it to the steel sheet below


Do a weld, let go of the trigger to stop the arc and it does not stop. I then have to reach around the back and flick off the power switch. Wait for a few seconds, turn back on then it is good to go for a while again.


What is causing this?
How can I fix it?

And sometimes the amperage display is all over the place, don't know if that is related.

Do you have it set on 2T or 4T?

I would think either the switch on the torch is bad, so the machine thinks you want to keep welding after its release OR there's a problem in the machine where it's not following the release of that switch.

I would first use a meter on the switch leads, at the plug where it connects to the welder, to determine if the switch is working properly...

Sounds like the switch on the torch (or foot pedal as the case may be). Call up Everlast in AU. That's what they are there for. Should be something simple. In the US the torches are under a separate 6 month warranty. I think it's the same in AU, but not sure.

The wires on the switch pcb were shorted.

Makes me wonder why you would leave so much exposed wire in the first place. Just shows lack of quality control at the factory.

You are right but it is also an economy torch. Keep in mind that the torch factory and welder factory are different. Also remember that these items are included as part of the courtesy package to get you "started". Other companies you buy every single item. You also have the option of purchasing an upgraded torch from us. We are now including a better torch, but the costs have risen on the welders as well to accommodate it. All torches and accessories have 6 month warranty only.

Goodness.....that is a lot of bare wire..!!!

Only good thing about it.......Looks like an easy fix..!! Cut back, resolder, add shrink tube.....Off and running again. Glad you found the problem. Sometimes they aren't that easy..!!
