Thread: 1950 Chevrolet Build .Pproject 2

Default 1950 Chevrolet Build .Pproject 2

Restoring my old Chevy , owned it since 1971 and got started on rebuilding all the sheet metal, had some cracks in some doors, replaced both inner and outer rockers one partial floor pan and rear quarters to build from donor cars. Here are some pics. Rear quaters were both replaced in steel, used original donor sheet metal. found some rust free inner fenders and some outer fenders and parts from other cars. The bottom rear quarters have the bumper insets shaved and removed. The top of a 51 chevy car rear quarter is the same contour and will fit in if you properly section out the old bottom.

The right quarter has pieces from 4 cars in it.

The top edge of each door above the glass had 18 trim holes in each door, These were tig welded up ground down and finished.

Each door had the deluxe trim molding on it and had several holes to be welded up and finished smooth.

Been using the 200dx on the door cracks and the mig on the rest of the sheet metal.

The Supercut 50P helps in cutting out odd shapes.

Talk about nostalgia,,,my first car was a 50 Pontiac,,how many people can say they have rode in or driven, Henry J's, Hudson Hornets, Desotos, etc...you could build 3 or 4 of todays cars with the iron from one of the old ones..

This one has a lot of History with the Kansas Highway Patrol and Local Sheriff and Police.
We used to carpool to High School back in the 70's one of the guys had a Desoto another had a 34 Plymouth with suicide doors when six of us were riding 2 set on the front fenders and straddled the headlights for the 4 mile trip to school.

This car had a 235 six that was built and ran exceptionally well. had to carry an extra generator because the cooling fins would expand at high rpm and cut the belt off or just fly off and dent the hood.
It was a lot of fun and still runs strong , has just set too long and needs restored.

Will post some more pic's in Sept after i finish visiting our son in Germany.

Suicide doors ,,,Lol,,,I could tell you a story about how our drunken bootlegger tried to open and close a door like that on a run to the liquor store ,,,fell out and broke his arm,,,left us kids trying to explain how that happened,,,and he claimed we pushed him out....those were the old days..good memories

Nice! I can't wait to see more pics. MY wife and I are are working on a '63 Thunderbird and I'm helping a buddy with a '65 GTO convertible that's in pretty sad shape. It's great to bring classic cars back to life and get them back on the road.

Now for interior, just set the buckets in last night and did a test run for comfort. My 200DX played a major role in this build with the serpentine drive ,tube bumpersand a lot of other things.

Very nice. Do you plan to keep it or flip it. After you drive it for awhile (with all that hard work in it and $$$)? Very nice ride and job.
