    Default new project. Motor base

    Hello all,

    Ive been in and out of this forum for a while, its been a busy year. I thought i would share my first project at my new job in san jose. It is a motor base and coupling shroud. I didnt take a lot of pics of the process, as I was new at on the job.

    The base is made from an I beam and some cross plate that the motor bolts to. The motor is a 200hp 8000lb GE.

    The whole mount was welded with 7018 rod.

    I made the coupler from steel. it was all mig welded

    That is one size L motor. I can see how the new boss might get a little uneasy with the new guy taking photos at work.

    What's the motor for? Did you have to drill mounting holes for the bolts, or did you maybe re-use parts of the old base?

    What did you move it with. It is amazing how heavy those things are. What does it drive?

    So you had to use a variable frequency drives to replace the clutch what does the variable frequency drives do and now you can not disconnect the 200HP motor drive?

    What don't they do. VFD's are great. Soft start, variable speed, braking, acceleration and deceleration ramps, all kinds of torque manipulation settings, along with motor protection, power saving, heat reduction, and a ton of other features. And like in this application, you can often replace a bunch of mechanical components with one.
    Long arc, short arc, heliarc and in-the-dark!

    The old base was cut out and scrapped. It was basically a hollow box. The new base is a lot more resistant to vibrations. The motors with vfd's can get some strong harmonics.
    The motor is bolted to two plates spaning the witdh. We drilled and taped the holes in the shop. It was all measured carefully and fabbed pretty accurate. It was made .25" short so it could be shimmed and aligned precisely.
    The basement has a trolley crane that is a W shape above all the pumps and motors rated at 10tons.
    Like Rambozo said vfd's are more efficient. Its not full on or off, you can tune the pump to flow what you need using less energy than using a clutch.
    These are used to transfer effluent to the nitrification tanks. (sewer plant) From what I can remember I believe the rated flow is for one pump is 20000gpm.

    I under stand the use of using the VFD's I have one in my CNC machine to very the RPM from 3-7500 RPM from 3 RPM it makes 100 foot pounds of torque up to 500 FPT at 300 RPM to 7500 RPM. So did the magnetic clutch very the speed of the pump.

    The magnetic clutch is actiually a electromagnetic governor. There are no clutch plates, the two shafts on either side are independant to mechanical connection. They only couple by magnetic forces. They allow the motor to be turning full speed and allow you to vary the speed the pump turns at. This setup uses more power than using a motor with vdf, so thats why we got rid of it.

    Interesting, other than the extra energy costs, it sounds like it would be advantageous if anything solid ever got jammed into the impeller; sure would soften up the blow.

    Well that would explain why it was so big. Some times bigger jobs are easer to work on then small if you have the equipment. I have work on 24 inch hydraulic cylinder 8 ft. long with the right equipment it was easy and struggled with a 4 in. X 24 in. long.
