The magnetic clutch is actiually a electromagnetic governor. There are no clutch plates, the two shafts on either side are independant to mechanical connection. They only couple by magnetic forces. They allow the motor to be turning full speed and allow you to vary the speed the pump turns at. This setup uses more power than using a motor with vdf, so thats why we got rid of it.
Well that would explain why it was so big. Some times bigger jobs are easer to work on then small if you have the equipment. I have work on 24 inch hydraulic cylinder 8 ft. long with the right equipment it was easy and struggled with a 4 in. X 24 in. long.
