For about the same money, would you take a 2012 200dx or a 2013 185? It will be used for personal use in my garage on my hot rod.
Thanks!

I would say go with the 200DX.

I need a MIG.... which one to buy:
I-Mig 160, I-Mig 200, or a MTS 160
FWIW, The new 185 are dual voltage. It is extra for 200 DX. And we have dropped the name "micro" from the name since so many people were getting the intended size reference confused with the process of micro welding.(<1 A)

I would go with the 200dX for the garage. I have one. The extra features may not be needed for what you are doing, but the pules may come into play if you are working on thin materials. Don't necessarily focus on bells and whistles though. They are more of a "since I have the knob I'll turn it" thing rather than a "need".
The 185 has all that you should ever "need", and even ore since it has frequency control. there are a huge number of tig welders and whole shops that don't have a single frequency adjustable welder.
FYI, my 200DX can be operated on a 110+ ft extension cord of 10AWG wire without any issues at full power. I plug this in to my dryer outlet in my basement as my garage is not wired for 240V.
My 200DX is an older unit that has different amp controls with the pedal, but the new ones are more conventional.
The 200 is bigger than the 185 as well.
If you have the cash, I'd go with the 200. Give sales a call and you might be pleased with the cost you can get one for as well. Oleg is a business man and is typically happy to give a few bucks off retail just for the asking.

I started with the 185 it was a good machine, but the extra features of the 200DX fitted my use better and and gave me more options when working on thin material.
To me the 185 is like a 3 speed transmission in my old Hot Rod and the 200DX is a 5 speed. I have the 220 volt late 2012 model with pulse and arc force.

Few threads on this already, but is the latest update to the 200dx a must have for a hobbyist ?
The 2013 version or something earlier?
The newest, 2013 model is basically just a new look. Features are the same as what they had been during late 2012.
New to welding!
