Default 20 years later and still working on it

i first had this 510 back in 1992 when it was a ex knox mtn race car and we painted it and put it back to a street car then someone offered me cash so i took it.they took it back to knox again then went through a few people and they took the 6cyl out and cut more firewall out and dropped a v8 in it and never seen the road again.a guy i know picked it up and had big plans but sat in his yard for 6 years or so. he called me up and asked if i wanted it back so i got it back with hopes of getting it running again

    back in 92

Man that brings back memories of my own. My uncle had a 510 in yellow for years. He had built it up and ran it at Sears Point keeping up with 5.0's and such. He had a number of trophies from out at the track. I think his only had a 4 banger in it but maybe it was a 6. Last I seen it had a dual carb setup and a pretty built motor but he got rid of it maybe 2 years ago. I want to see more pics of the V8 stuffed into that little car.

Talk about things coming back around! That's a great story. I have some pretty fond memories of a 510 too. A good friend of mine had one way back with a v6 in it. I can't wait to see this project unfold too. Looks like it will be a good year for project pictures in the Everlast forum.

Wow, it's too bad the car got so hacked up! Hopefully you can get it back together and drive it soon! Cool story with a happy ending at least. It's cool to see a V-8 conversion done right, but that only seems to happen with one out of ten cars and the other nine end up on Craigslist in pieces. They sure took a big section of floorboard and firewall out of your car for the conversion. The body looks presentable and is all one color from the looks of it though.

How long ago was this and what (general) area is your uncle from? I don't recall seeing that car racing when I used to go out to Sears Point (I didn't go to every race). A coworker (friend) of mine had a 510 that was loaded up with Webers or Mikuni's and all the go fast goodies, and he ended up selling it to a family member. He seemed to be tight with the local circle of other 510 owners, so naturally your story peaked my curiosity. I always liked the 510's.

I grew up in Vallejo/Benicia with family and friends all around there. My Uncle lived in Vallejo at the time he was racing it but it has been quite some time. If I had to guess, I would say it was ~20 years ago that he regulary raced. I believe he was running mainly 90-95 and then after that he would occasionally take it out for a period of time before stopping all together. I have not been out that way much since 2003 when I moved out of california but I believe sears point has all been changed since he raced his car. I know he took his truck out not too long ago and ran it but the car is went to impound and we have not seen it since. My uncle recently moved to oregon but I still have some family in Napa and my father is in Vallejo I believe. I asked my cousin and I guess he actually got rid of the car around 2006. My uncles 510 was a 69 with a 4cyl.

I would have been pretty young at that time if I did see the car at the track. Sears Point has changed a ton in the last 10 years! It's really nice out there now, but prices are ridiculous for any seats to racing events, or even a parking pass! I think my friend from work is from Napa originally, but he's lived in Vallejo/American Canyon for at least 10 years. I don't recall what color his car was, but he still works on it with the family member that he sold it to (well, he did a few years back anyway). There used to be more than a handful of 510's around here, but I haven't seen one lately. Actually, a lot of the road racers from Sears Point had street cars "back in the day" and you'd see 356 and 912 Porsche's, mini cooper's, Datsun's, and Mustangs running around in their "sheep's clothing" with barely visible roll bars (or occasionally wide fender flares) being the only giveaways that the car wasn't stock...I miss those days!

cool dime! and firewall is hacked but! definitely within the realm of just buying a 50 dollar steel wheelbarrow to fill in. gets you formed strong wall and an engine notch out as well. buddy had v8 one for years, was fun, but todays light ls motor would probably match 4 banger weight. Do that and skip sears and join scca, that way you get weekends at thunder hill for cheap.
