The peas didn't make it to the pot...baby was sick yesterday and spent the entire afternoon at the ER. Had gone to the doc on NY's eve, and she told us if the fever didn't clear up bring her to the ER the next day. Ended up being a viral infection, but not specific to anything they tested for like RSV, or the flu. (thankfully) This is a small town hospital, but extremely up to date, and clean, so it wasn't as bad as it seems...but they had to do a battery of very very unpleasant tests for a small 8 mo. child... The folks at the hospital are efficient so we sat less than 15 minutes before they brought us back. But ended up sitting in the exam room most of the time waiting for the results of the lab work. But nurses stopped by and even the baby's pediatrician came in as she was on call for the Labor and Delivery. (On top of that, she called today to follow up with us) Baby is much better today, but a high fever for several days is scary for a young one. I don't think the hospital has about 25 rooms, but you couldn't have asked for better treatment on a holiday.
So by the time we got back home, we just popped the smoked ham in and heated up the greens and ended up eating about 9 pm. Blackeyes aren't my favorite, so I substitute purple hulls or brown crowders, usually. Don't forget the ham/hamhock used for seasoning...got to have pork on New Years, preferably in the salted/smoked variety.
