    Thanks for the comment Spike.

    I've heard when doing aluminum, wait until the puddle is shinny, then start adding filler.

    Is that the same technic for steel? I don't want to burn through.

    Yes, the filler will cool the puddle when you dip. Add filler just as the puddle starts to keyhole at the front.
