Thread: All SS cart.

  1. Default All SS cart.

Let me preface this by saying I ain't never gonna try welding thin SS again. It warps like crazy and blows holes too easy.

I made it to mostly hide under a work bench. That's why the bottle is in the front.

Also made a wood 'shoe' for the foot peddle so it would be more stable.

Added a few things like more bracing and cross members and 'antlers' to hold the helmet and torch 'n stuff

That will be a solid cart for sure and rust free. Heavy too. I take it you had a lot of SS laying around?

On the dislike for SS. Where you using pulsed DC? What current for max and min? What type gas, straight argon? Were you in an area with no breeze? Did you use 308 or 316 filler?

Anyway, you got the cart done. Now on to fun stuff.

I tried using the pulse on the thin stuff (.040") but it was free standing and the edges weren't touching because of the warping. I'm just not good enuff to fool with thin sheet. Even .060" was easier.

The filler was 316. I have/had lots of SS laying around. I still have 7/8" OD SS tubing/railing but I'm saving that for other projects. Still have a couple 20' sections of 1 1/2" SS tubing. Boats use a lot of SS.

That is some nice stock to have around, and 316 no less.

You can try setting the base amps real low, peak almost off, and pulse ON time all the way down if you want to try it again. Also, you can tack every so many inches and go back and tack in the middle if the tacks, that will help keep the heat down and allow you to get it done, but it will take some time.

OK! Thanks for the tip. I still have some .040" sheet laying around. It'll probably help my overall learning to practice on sheetmetal.
