Thread: Making bedroom furniture...

  1. #1

    Default Making bedroom furniture...

My wife is making the downstairs bedroom a "rock n roll" themed room to go along with her rock hallway.
She found a bedroom set on the internet she wanted but it was a place in New York and they wouldn't ship it to Missouri.
Well I opened my mouth and said maybe I could build it ........ DOH! I gotta learn to keep my mouth shut! lol...

Anyway, the first picture is the real bedroom set she wanted and I'll post pics as I finish each piece I build.

First thing I made was the headboard...

Had to finish the leg notches by hand because I don't have all the right tools..

    Make some brackets..

    Frame Rails...

    Adjustable center supports...

And my wife trying it out....

The "real" headboard looks like it has a slight curve from bottom to top but mine doesn't have that.

Nice work. What's up with women and pillows ? They put so many pillows on the couch, chairs and bed there's no room to sit.

Thanks! I wish I had woodworking tools, it would make my jobs easier on me! lol...

I can't believe how hard a headboard can be to make.. The bend at the top was tough and making it 1 1/2" in depth added to the difficulty.
I'm using Red Oak and that does not like to bend at all!! I walked up to the salesperson in the wood section at Lowes and asked if they would discount this bent piece of Oak I found in the bin....It was Way warped but pretty close to the curve I needed. Got it for 50% off!!! (I'm a tight A$$ )
I figured the nightstand and dresser would be the tough part.......

Too funny- every time I've wondered "how tough could it be" I *always* wind up find out *exactly* how tough it can be, and taking 3 times longer than expected to do it!

+1 on the WTF pillow thing, we're running a pillows to people ratio of 6.5:1 at our place.

Well, about a month ago my wife decided she wanted a wood shelf above the washer and dryer.......That turned into painting every damn room in the house, changing all the ceiling fans and now building freakin furniture! I like to stay busy but this is rediculous!!

AND.... Now that her best friend has seen the bed, she want's me to make her one and help her with an island in her kitchen...... Told her my talent is part of the benifits of being married to me, along with my staggering handsome manliness.

Sure I can make that for you honey, but I will need to get a mortising attachment for my drill press.

And I thought my wife was expensive!

She hardly ever spends money on herself or something she wants, but when she starts...I usually have to smack her and remind her we have bills to pay..lol.

This is my next item to build...going to get wood later today.

Nice workmanship! The headboard and bed look really great! I think the nightstand is going to require some more tools (or an excuse for tools)! Maybe a thickness planer for the top or new router or something

Sounds much better than the constant stream of nickle and dime stuff that I have to deal with. Of course she would never spend $90 on a pillow either, instead she would buy a new sewing machine just so she could make them. I just can't figure out where she got that from.

I decided to use Oak step plates for the top of the nightstand since they were 1" thick.

Looks good. The furniture you are making is probably way better than what you woudl buy anyway. Decently made furniture is EXPENSIVE!.

I like the idea for the weld and the countersunk screws in the corner.

For Sure! This is all solid Oak. The stuff we are replacing is pressed board junk.

    More Pics!!
I have to do some final adjustments to the drawer face plates but it's pretty much ready to sand and stain....

Nice work looks like you have the patience to spend the time to do quality work, I do not know where you are in Missouri but there is a wide variety of hardwoods available to the woodworker at very reasonable pricing.
A lot of the sawmills will sort there lumber and color and grain match it for customers leaving some pretty nice lumber left at very reasonable pricing. The dark streaks in your material are signs on Minerals and would have been downgraded and priced at a lower rate than the norm.

PS: If you are close to the KC Metro i can hook you up with some suppliers to help lower your project costs,I might even have some oak sheet good you could use at a discounted price.
