we had a fellow that worked in the tool trailer that would put those frozen pizzas in the rod oven about an half hour before lunch. he did say that they tasted weird if you put them in the top instead of the bottom.

I don't weld everyday so maintaining a rod oven is not efficient. What I use is an old extra-long electric fry pan with/lid. There are vents on the lid to let out the steam.

About 4 pounds of rod will fit corner to corner inside of the fry pan. Crank it up to 500 degrees for a couple of hours, turn it down, and use the warm rods right out of the pan. Anyway, it seems to work for me.

That couldn't have been good for any electrodes in the oven, what with pizzas releasing water vapor and whatever else. "I'll have a 7018 1/8", hold the anchovies, extra pepperoni." How did the electrodes weld after that?

Turn the amps down, stick the rod to your work till the steam rolls out of it and then crank the amps back up and weld. This is what I was told could be done for home projects at another site. I have done this, but don't have the experience to know if it helped or not.
