I dont have too many close neighbors to worry about... yet. However I am setting on a hill and you can see my house from a distant road. If the power is out and my lights are on, it will stand out. In a bad situation that would not be ideal.....

You'll just have to weld some iron gates up and put them around your property. Keeps the animals and children in, and the criminals and nosy neighbors out! Problem solved. Especially if you think they are going to be developing on the land in your area.

We still have one of the last wooded areas in our area. Everything seems to live in our yard. Racoons are a pain, the hawks are cool, but drive the cats crazy. No major snake issues.

The fence is only so good, somehow they all got in. Keep the gates closed.

At least you have some control or say so over things. That's not a totally bad deal.

A neighbor next to my father's ranch runs a fully time business by growing and selling organic produce to larger grocery stores. He told us that he had issues with deer getting into his produce, so he put an 8' tall "deer fence" up around the area, but the deer were still able to get in by jumping over it!

Here in "the city" we have 7' tall redwood fences all around the house, and 5' custom iron entry gates through the driveway (the tallest that this county allows legally) and we still get the racoons, along with squirrels and other rodents. We try to keep the cats out but they get in the yard too (at least our dog stays in the yard).

On one occasion we even had a spun out tweeker (woman) "skip" over the fence while high on meth (the police were serving a warrant for her arrest). In reality, you're right about unwanted guests still getting into yards that have steel gates and tall fences, regardless of how tall you make them.

We have a fair amount of wildlife in the area. It is not uncommon to look out and see a few deer standing in the yard.

As far as the rest of the development, I am not too worried about getting neighbors any time soon with the economy in the state it is. We are actually considering turning the land back into farm land since the county thinks so highly of the land. Not to mention we are sick and tired of being harassed about erosion control every time we turn around. It's amazing that the government can bitch if you have ANY area of exposed dirt in a development yet if it is a "farm" you can strip the land and make as big of a mess as you want and they cant say anything.

Then if you let anything grow on it, the fire dept wants to have a word with you. You really can't win, when there are so many conflicting regulations.
