I had to make these metal grates for work. There was four of them. Two had to fit in like a 29" hole or something. They were a custom fit. They fin in a wall getting bolted there to keep people and trash out. They were made out of 3" angle iron 1/4" thick. The rebar was #6 bar. I cut all the rebar with a hydrolic shear. Cut all the angle iron with an ol chop saw. It really pays to have a good one. Had to use a square to get everything as close to perfect as i can so the unsquare cuts it makes aint even worse. I spent a few days on them doing everything but I wasnt just working on them. Prolly would of only took two days if I worked only on them. For spacing I just cut a few little wood blocks. Plans called for 3" by 11" spacing of the rebar but it wasnt right for the size. Also the measurement for the longest angle iron wasnt right and the first one was all out of square. Welded everything together with a miller 251. All in all went good.
