Cutting with no eye protection...

So my helmet goes to shade #9 but that is too dark for some cuts.
I drew out some flames the other day on a sheet of Aluminum and had to cut them with no eye protection on so I could see the lines. not good, especially when my eyes are bad anyway.

Do they sell goggles in shades of .. 5, 6, 7 to use with Plasma cutting?

I bought some wrap around sunglasses in shade 5 from Zink Safety , They work good for cutting and grinding.

I use a face shield that supposedly has a shade 5 shield for cutting. Use a mechanics light if you can’t see that has helped me before.

Thanks for the link, I like the Eastwood glasses... I Do Not suggest using a plasma cutter with no eye protection, I learned the stupid way

Having only one eye to begin with I take as few chances as possible ... when cutting I use a #9 but I bring out as much light as possible ... I use halogen spot lights or set up outside in the sun ... honest it works ... can see my outline and have good protection. The only time I don't use shade is when I'm coloring with acetylene and O2 even then I use shade till I have the flame set so it's not overly bright ... if I shade while doing the actual coloring I can't get the proper effect.

I find these safety glasses to be very strong and do not scratch if you treat them with some care.

That's a great idea, Winky. I was trying to get out of the heat over the weekend so I figured I'd resume welding after dinner. Good plan except while it is fine seeing the arc when it is lit, can't see enough of the material to start a good arc when the sun starts to go down! I'm going to get a spot light.

I like the link from Ray C. Am also looking for some safety glasses that fit better over my prescriptions.

The LWS here had a face shield that was either 5 or 6, so I got it and couldn't be happier. No problems seeing the lines, especially in the daylight, and doesn't interfere with glasses either. I don't recall how much I paid, but it really wasn't out of line for a Huntsman.

Jackson has the same thing down here. #5 and #6 we have at the LWS and full face, they are nice. I have a friend that uses it for light MIG. They are about $22 for the Jackson. #5 is good for cutting and grinding (cutting=plasma)

I went to my LWS and they are ordering some OTG safety glasses for me.
I could probably get them cheaper online but these guys take care of me on gas and filler rods so it all equals out..

I have only used a plasma cutter a handful of times but have never used any shades.... after reading this I am guessing I probably should have.... Would standard sunglasses provide enough protection or should I invest in goggles?

Pick up some number 5 shades. You need them, sunglasses are not enough.

Will do... actually I may already have some goggles that came with a acetylene torch (not shore of the shade...). A good pair of goggles are cheaper than a new set of eyes...

That's for sure on the eyes. The O/A set will work fine (probably a 4-5), they are a little less comfortable than the sun glass wrap around type.

Another option is a full face shield and use it for O/A. plasma cutting and grinding with better skin and flying parts protection..

It could. 6 might be a little dark for some people. The grind mode of many are about 4 which can work, too, but is a little light, for most. How bright your surroundings are have an effect, too. Everyone is a little different. However, the helmets that have cutting modes to go from 3 or 4 to 8 or 9 will cover whatever you need. That's the great thing about adjustable shades. No more mixing sunglasses with #5 shaded face shield to get it just a little bit darker for some bright O/A work.
