I melted down my WP17 as well. The hose that goes over the power conductor is nylonish and it doesn't take much heat. Its not rubber like the jacket on a welder cable.
All I need is new hose and a seath and mine will be as good as new. I've got it rewired as an air cooled torch using a piece of welder cable for now.
WP9, WP17 are air cooled while WP20, WP18 are the water cooled versions that share the same hardware. Be careful using a water cooled torch with a plain cable. Not only are the power cables cooled by the water, the torch is too. You can overheat the torch head and ruin it, running it without water. If you want air cooled, get an air cooled torch and cables.
