I have used it on 2% thoriated only and it works great once you get the hang of it. Heat it, dip (not too deep) and dip again and again until you get the point you like.

I think someone said 500 point from a jar at $8 a jar was not worth it. But if you are on the job and getting paid for the job a flat rate, probably well worth it.

I suspect anyone who said 500/$8 isn't a deal hasn't priced out decent tungsten grinders or finegrit wheels lately. Seriously, $8 is less than the cost of a decent cheeseburger, fries and soda. S/F....Ken M

That Chem Sharp looks handy for a guy like myself. I hate needing to sharpen the tungsten and having a different wheel on the grinder and needing to swap them before sharpening. The chem sharp could be a real time saver when you are right in the middle of a bead and accidentally dip the tungsten.

who says you have to? why don't you try sharpening your tungsten on a masonary disc that has been grinding concrete and then try a dedicated grinding wheel. report back the striking difference in weld quality that you witnessed. i'll be waiting. this aint nasa and this aint rocket science. i posted a comment about a post i read where the poster said in the field he used a rock to sharpen his tungsten. that was, of course, a bit of humor but it was funny because those of us who have spent time working in field conditions know what it is like to search for something, anything, that will put a point, any kind of point, on the tungsten.

as far as sharpening the tungsten with the chem sharp; that is playing to mixed reviews. at five hundred sharpenings for the price of a cheeseburger and fries it is a bargain especially compared to the 265 dollar tungsten sharpener i keep in my gangbox and use maybe once a week if i'm lucky. lol

    Well, I do have chem-sharp.

However, yesterday at the end of the day, I was fixing a lawn mower deck (6' deck). Small repair though, so I went to use the new TIG-160STH sitting on the floor, and flipped the wrong tank on. No major damage but figured I would touch the tungsten up (1/16" so it was a tad small too).

I ran right to a bench grinder (used by everyone), and then did the mower, all looked great of course, threw some paint on there after it cooled. Not the right procedure of course but I was in a hurry and it was not a space shuttle part or military job.

NOW, if I ordered a pack of tungsten I would sit and heat and sharpen them all at once with the chem-sharp (it is like some weird form of therapy). In the field, I would just take more than one electrode with me

I still think chem-sharp is cool.

Hey Rod, where did you get your gas lenses? Or, where is a good place to pick up some good value gas lenses?
Is it OK to want to break something just so that you can weld it back together?

I have been hobby TIG'n for at least 6 yrs, but just bought my first gas lens when I purchased the 250EX in March. I can not go without a gas lens now. I just recieved a large diameter gan lens...these things are massive.

I was using zirconated for AC but I am trying those rare earth and have Lanthanated I have yet to try. I am digging my 250EX over the old Synchrowave 180 at this point. Love the 20WP torch, smaller and cooler.

Thanks guys. You folks using a lens because of the better coverage in general, coverage in cases where there might be a bit of a draft or to save gas (if that is possible)?
Is it OK to want to break something just so that you can weld it back together?

I don't think it will help much with a breeze, but I hear you can increase the tungsten stick out. Then the larger cup tends to offset that some.

OK, Rod's pictures is river-weld.com (safe and good to buy from), good deals on EBAY too. Been mentioned for a long time here.

I bought my last WP-20 lenses from weldingcity.com (and his MIG wire is safe too), it has also been said they are safe and good by many for a long time.. On the cups, make sure you tell him the series torch you have.

Rod, if you are talking to me on the pedal, I do not use a pedal. But I did hook up our China made pedal to a TIG160STH and it worked quite well. It was sort of fun.

I'll have to remember that because I do want to try some gas lenses ... I've been using a small cup and no lense on my DC unit and it's really a pain to see what I'm doing with the electrode stuck so far back ... it will be nice be able to push it out a little further.
