    My little table that is 36x30 including the flat of the metal brake surface. I think mine is 1/4. If I used 1/4 on a larger table, I would underbrace it, or it could warp with heat and gravity. Thicker is better of course, but pricey. I'm always on a budget. Not sure what I spent for the table. Casters from harbor freight, so 20 bucks. I forget the price of the top, (maybe it is 5/16), but it was the costly thing to have cut. I also bought the square tube. I had some little flat feet to mount the casters on. So it wasn't much. I could see a person spend quite a bit on a large fabrication table, a bunch in a quality top. For a large table, I think 3/8" would be a good start.

    next table i make using 2 x4 box 1/4 so have slots to clamp down stuff when welding
