Thread: 1931 Model A coupe

    Default 1931 Model A coupe

This one is a HUGE project. I've wanted a coupe ever since I was 8 and I was shown the immortal movie, "American Graffitti" . I've owned it for a few years and have just been slowly collecting parts for it. The goal is to get it as a rolling chassis by next year. We'll see if that happens. Here are the specifics:

    -Blown 331 1956 Chrysler Hemi
    -A833 Hemi transmission
    -Winters Champ quick change
-Tall and skinny bias plies on 16x4 and 16x5 Chrome Steelies
    -Chopped 5"
-4" dropped original 32 ford axle
    -F100 brakes
-Split wishbones on the front and ladder bars on the rear, all sitting on a 32 Ford Frame
-Should look like a really late 50's/early 60s Hot Rod

And I hope for it to look something like these:

Are the RC cars for stress relief? I would go for the bottom look. The original is cool, but not as cool. You have motor and trany for it?

Yeah I have the engine and trans for it already. I've already got a big case gmc 6-71 for it also. I have the majority of the hard parts for it, just gotta start getting a mock-up going on it. It for sure will NOT be close to a stocker!!! The RC cars are kind of a stress relief for me, but I spend way too much $$$ on em!

I love cars styled like that - even before I got a model kit of one when I was about 8 (had a rumble seat in that one). I see you've already taped up to cut the top. Should be a really nice looking vehicle!
Is it OK to want to break something just so that you can weld it back together?

I've always had a huge spot in my heart for A's and deuses. My buddy Rainer has a VERY sweet 31 coupe that he stuck a nailhead in. I gock evertime I see that thing. It has the perfect chop, just classic and timeless. Good luck with you build. I'm sure you know about the HAMB? I have my 55' Ford project on there...just sold my 49 F3. Check it out if you havent and good luck..

A friend of mine use to tell me all the time that I should be building an old 30's ford instead of the car I have been building. I like them but not really the car I want to build for myself. How many of the RC's are nitro/electric? Thats also one of my many hobbies and I have too much tied up into 3 nitros.

I'm in the middle of a brake job on my '31 Deluxe Coupe. Mine is somewhere around 95% original. The brakes are the standard hydraulic replacement of the original mechanical brakes - '39 Ford system. And it has been converted to a 12V system with alternator rather than the generator system. Other than that, most is original, and even all as built - not replacement parts.

Not a lot of welding to b e done, but I do fabricate a few brackets on it here and there.
