Well, the issues I had with Porosity are now gone. Seems like there were a host of little thing that were working against me. Any one of them could have caused the problem. Hoses, insificient cleaning - inside and out, bad gas and technique - probably in combination with each other.
Well, tonight, with hoses replaced, new gas, flow set to 7.5L/min and VERY CLEAN material, I sharpened-up a 1/16" electrode and tried it again.
I built a simple joint of 1/4" mild steel and vola! This is a combination of 3 welds. No porosity at all.
I'm sure the pros will point out issues with this weld but, for a 25-year broadcast engineer and 2 month welder, I didn't think this was half bad.
