    Default 6010 fingernails

    I've been practicing running some 5p 6010s vertical up hill and can't figure out why the rod starts finger nailing about half way through the rod. Its so bad at times that I have to have the rod darn near vertical trying to compensate. I haven't had any issues with using the rod in any other position. I've tried moving around the ground clamp thinking that it was arc blow, but it didn't help.

    I'm using 1/8'' lincoln 5p 6010s at 85 amps and about 30% dig. I'm using 1/4 inch steel.

    Its just a T-joint with a fillet weld. I'll try and post some pictures later tonight.

    Here are some pictures of whats going on. Every rod I burn starts out just fine and turns to crap half way through.

    you said u were using 5P 6010, but all the 6010 i burn doesent have a red coating, its grey. since your doing an uphill weld, your rod angle should be almost perpendicular to the plate. if you have your rod pointing up a little, the flux will fingernail like that, but should burn off just infront of your puddle. just try to keep your steps as uniform as possiable. only step about the size of your rod(1/8")

    He's running 6010 what some people call "red rod"
    If your running 1/8 at 85 amps that is way to cold. With all the bb's on the plate you temperature settings are off. I think 6010 3/32 burns around 90 amps depending on the machine of course.

    @ Sean, I think either you or your machine is off. As per Lincoln's website (link below) the 3/32 run between 40 and 70 amps and the 1/8 run between 75 and 130 amps. I usually run 3/32 7018s right at 90 amps though.

    I tried the same weld again, 1/4 inch t-weld vertical up. I ran at 90 amps this time and tried to keep the rod perpendicular. I usually, out of habit, use a 10 or so degree push just like I run a 7018. It seemed to work slightly better, but not by much. I could see the pointy part of the fingernailed flux touching and melting off in the weld puddle.

    The one thing that I have noticed is that if a rod starts to fingernail, I'll get a fresh rod and start where I left off and it will burn ok for half the rod and start acting up just like the rod before. I kind of wonder if there isn't something up with the rods I'm using.

    I thought 6010 was for downhill welding?

    From the looks of the welds, I would spend some more time making some in a different position (horizontal) to ensure your settings are correct for the rod before trying a more difficult welding position.

    Are you running the 6010 uphill the same way you run a 7018 (triangle or V)? Or are you whipping the 6010 uphill the same way you run a 6010 flat? I still say your too cold for the size plate your running. The weld to me looks cold.

    Lincolns electrode guide says 1/8 6010 flat 120amps. Some of the range your are given on the stick electrode guide depends on the position, uphill, downhill, flat, overhead etc. Flat being the highest temperature. Uphill requires a little less heat because of the penetration.
