Great post. My Plasma (Power Ultra205)was acting up last night, doing weird things. Pulled it apart and the electrode was loose as was the tip. Just used it and it is back to it's normal great self. The only problem I have had with it other than this issue is that the thing cuts were I aim versus where I want it to cut. Still learning to control.

A loose electrode could could possibly get loose enough to ground out and cause some damage internally, especially those with a pilot arc. It is conceivable, though not probable.

With some of the units, I can't remember which, there is a little wrench that will slip on the electrode to turn it. Use it. Finger tight is not always enough.

Great feedback. I will certainly check for a loose electrode. I do think it is something simple like this so I’m not too concerned. When the machine cut it did so quite impressively. I hope to get some free time later this week.

I was asked if I figured out the root cause of the trouble I was having with the plasme and the answer is no. I have not had the chance to mess with it much. I did however check the electrode and it was tight. Now there was a rather large accumulation of slag that was between the electrode and the ceramic cup but I’m not sure if that would result in the issue I was having. I assume this occurred when I attempted to do a penetration cut in the ¾ steel. The machine did successfully pierce the metal but there was a considerable amount of blow back. When I get the chance I will plug it in and try a cut with the cleaned out torch.

    Wayne,

Any unit for most brands is not intended to pierce at or near full cut capacity.
Piercing is only about half of rated cut capacity for a number of reasons, but chiefly the reasons you cited. Slag build up and blowback onto nozzle and subsequent overheating and wandering of the plasma arc. Piercing is the quickest way to destroy a nozzle.

Yes, the slag can cause issues especially as it serves as an alternate conduit for the arc to wander to the side of the nozzle. It can overheat and burn up the torch eventually. A lot of times, the slag will actually conduct the arc and you can burn through the side of the nozzle and short the unit.. This probably hasn't happened in this case, but it could have given the information you just posted.

Also what color wires do you have in the unit and which are you using to wire the plug?

    Hello Mark,
If I remember correctly my feed wires are black, white and green. My supply is fed through an extension cord using SO 8-2 w/ground. I cleaned up the slag and did not notice any burn through. I hope to get some time on it soon but I really need the 250EX so I can start to weld up and few things. I have a set of QD forks to build for my loader. I will use the plasma more when get that under way.

    Smile Small But Very important.

Years ago Dad cut the locks off our enclosed trailers because they were in the way. Now we need the locks in place.....

Hmm? Somebody needs a plasma cut 50. I'll try to post some pics.
