Here's some more details of the project...

I countersunk a small screw to hold the wood handle in place.
On the lower shelf I inset a T nut and then glued and screwed a small strip of wood to hold the T nut in and hide it all. I didn't want to just run a screw into the wood because it would eventually strip out.
