Thread: The best modifications for your tig welder

Default The best modifications for your tig welder

Here are my top modifications that I have found to make my Powertig 250EX a real joy to use.

The best mod I found was to replace the original factory torch with a 20 series torch. I chose the Weldtech WT20F-25 watercooled torch. It is a 200 amp torch and I love it. Bendable head and really light and easy to handle.

The next best mod I found was getting a larger argon tank. I started off with a 125, then a 150, then a 200 and now a 325. Not having to go to the LWS every week is great plus the price of gas goes down with the larger tanks.

Next best mod was getting a longer ground cable. I now have a 25 foot cable and it makes for easier welding in a larger area. Instead of dragging the cart around, I can move in a 25 foot arc around the welder. Plenty for what I do.

My plans are for a new foot pedal, although the factory pedal is fine. I hear some good things about the foot pedal offered by Everlast.

I also plan on getting an Everlast water cooler. I hate having to drag out the hose every time I need to weld. Having that hose just makes for more things to have to watch not to trip over.

I've got to say that having the Powertig 250EX is a joy. I now wish I would have gotten it sooner. Being able to make things that others only dream about is what it is all about.

Please post when you find a smaller size pedal. I did note that East Wood looked like there was different/smaller than ours

the small torch was a big help - next thing for me is would be some sort of quick disconnect for the argon fitting on the back of the welder
    sold my miller mig
    got a PT250EX

I see in your avatar that you are saving up for a plasma cutter.

I have the Powerplasma 50 and I love it to death. Makes cutting so darned easy. I hated using cut off wheels on a 4.5 grinder. Decided my first Everlast machine would be a plasma cutter. After that, the Powertig 250EX and I haven't looked back.

The thing I really hated about using a grinder is that the sparks actually can cut a hole in your clothing. I've cut through several jeans and shirts with the sparks hitting my clothes. Those darned sparks just eat through so darned fast you don't even know it is happening till it does.

I'm not sure I understand what purpose that would serve.
Penncrest Buzzbox - Infinite amp control! Man the 70's were good.
Everlast Powerplasma 60 - Reliable unit, cuts well.
Everlast i-MIG 250P w/spoolgun - Really smooth, plenty of cajones.
Everlast 250EXT - Sometimes it just takes a kick in the balls...
Everlast 255EXT - Just started playing

I do odd jobs in odd locations so I have to truck the welder and tank around and it was kind of a pain to keep pulling off the barb fitting. Now since I have posted this I ended up going the other way and put the quick disconnect on the regulator side. So now each machine has the hose and fitting on it and I can just plug the one I need into the tank
