How many watt generator does the powerarc 200 need to run off of

The limiting factor on most all of the generators is the 30 amp 220 volt receptacle, something like this 6000 watt job should do the trick http://www.northerntool.com/shop/too...1723_200381723 of course bigger is always better but the 30 amp plug still limits the draw on the generator. Sean Murphy has been using one similar to the northern tool one above and would be the best person to give an opinion on the subject.

I was on a budget, but I have had very good luck with my generator. I did purchase the extended warranty because I was using it to run my welder. At some point I most likely will purchase a 10,000 watt or larger unit. I have not had any troubles so far! I would purchase the largest one I could afford if I were you. If you can get a 10,000 watt then you have the same power generating capabilities as some of the miller and lincoln generator welders. Like stated before get the largest you can afford and get the extended warranty, that way you can take it back! Northern Tool's extended warranty gave me a total of 4 years replacement with accidental damage coverage. That is something to think about as well.

So your saying a 30 amp 220 plug is good enough if it has enough watts. The lower amp plug wont hurt the welder any?

My generator is 240v 30amp, but also consider that I am not maxing out the welder. I am running 1/8" welding rods 120-140amps. Not sure what the running amps are for the welder. The 200dx is 27amps at 240v, I would imagine the running amps of the Power Arc 200 would be reasonably close. If you think you would max out the welder then look at a bigger generator. I was on a budget and I stay within my means of power, but at some point I will upgrade to a larger honda generator.

We needed a backup genny for hurricane season and I've been wanting to take my welding mobile to do in field fixes on ag equipment and buckets and stuff. Got a bobcat 250 and couldn't be happier. loads of power and can run the 256 just fine. Looking into getting into doing portable line boring and this will be the perfect setup. For the price of a honda you can buy a bobcat or trailblazer and have the power and the ability to do mobile welding work. Something to consider

Timberwolf is correct about a bobcat or trailblazer. I just want to stress that I had a certain amount of $$$ available. My route got me to where I could earn more money quicker, and then upgrade my equipment as I can afford. I looked hard at the Miller Wildcat, but it was a little out of my budget. Whatever route you go, get the largest generator or generator welder you can afford. I love my PowerArc 200, so I will probably get a larger Honda generator when I have the cash. I just like how quiet they run! I really wanted a honda powered thermal arc unit, but I wanted something with a warranty.
