Building up shaft

I have to build up the end of a 7/8" diameter 316 stainless steel shaft and have no experience with this. My understanding is that the steel can't get too hot or the properties of the stainless steel are changed, what is that temperature and what techniques are used to control the temperature. Is it just run a bead or two and wait for it to cool?

You can do it TIG or Stick. Yes, you need to run about a half a rod and and let it cool if stick... Mainly for the rod's sake. Use something good like red baron /excalibur for stick. Don't go cheap or you'll regret it.

It is 316 stainless so the Excalibur is out and I was planning on using Lincoln 316L with TIG, my concern was if there is a change in grain structure from overheating. I've had stainless shafts built up before and they were nasty to machine and just wondered if they used the wrong filler or it was from overheating.
