PowerTig 200dx question

Hello everyone!

new guy posting a question bout a new to me 200dx (second owner). its a model older than the current one for sale I purchased used for quite a good deal. While lift-arc or stick welding the AMP readout responds correctly. If I plug the foot pedal in the readout defaults to -025 and doesnt change regarding the position of the foot pedal or the rotation of the AMP dial. if I depress the foot pedal everything kicks on and i can weld, but the readout goes from -025 to 010 and then back again.

is this normal operation? thanks for any help!

That would be typical of an older 200DX. The amperage should be controlled on the foot pedal. If it doesn't have a knob it should. Amps cannot be limited on the panel. When actually welding the amps should reflect then on the panel. It does not appear from you description anything is wrong.

thank you. after some further testing with someone watching the panel the Amp readout is indicative of the position of the pedal. I was just confused why once something is plugged in the amps go from whatever they are set at to a -024 ..

so your saying. regardless of where i have the amps set on the panel i can crank the pedal down and get full 200 out of it? i can't set a limit of amps on the panel when running the pedal?

Your pedal should have an amps limit knob on the side if it is that style. But you don't use the display, instead you have to use the printed scale on the pedal knob.

i have one pedal with the dial on the toe edge, and a normal tig pedal with no dial. Both of these pedals cause the same result. while i don't use the dial pedal b/c the rack and pinion inside are pretty smoked and tend to skip teeth and screw with the amp output. my standard pedal seems to travel normally with no issues on the rack and pinion.

neither pedal is very nice. working on finding a suitable replacement that has the same pinout .. not that it really matters i can sacrifice the crummy pedal cord if i have to

The one with the dial is the one that you need to use. The dial will limit your max amps. You can try to beef up the rack with a stronger spring to prevent slippage.
