Tacked, brushed and grease free.
Looking at the tack, I think it may be magnesium.

If its magnesium the tack will break almost like glass where it contacts the magnesium with a tap of a hammer. You may have to order some rod. Its been many years but it is straight forward with the right rod. The arc will be a little different color but you will be alright.
Is magnesium hot short like aluminum?
Magnesium welded with aluminum filler or aluminum welded with magnesium filler will sort of look ok, but will be like a crumbly powder under the surface skin and break right apart. It's a grain boundary issue.
BTW you can use vinegar to see what you have. It will foam up on mag, and do nothing on alum. Not as exciting as filing some off and setting it on fire, but it works.
