Air Dryer Recommendation

I have the Super Ultra 205 and am looking for a good air dryer. I went to Home Depot and looked at the dessicant dryers. They were all pink in the package. (They should be blue) I purchased (2) of them..... took them home... and put (1) in my microwave to dry out..... 30 seconds later.... smoke poured out and the dryer was literally..... burnt toast.... I was wondering what other use and how do they go about drying them out? Living in Alabama in the summer is a very humid environment.... I do not mind drying out the dessicant, but would like one that is easy to take apart....

If you get a whole house water filter, you can take that apart and fill it with bulk desiccant. Most crystal type cat litter is silica gel, so that is easy to get anywhere. That will give you a pretty large volume. Also, how you run your air lines can have a big difference in how much moisture makes it to the end.

I was thinking about going the water filter route.... I have a (3) filter setup for my reverse osmosis.... are you saying to remove the filter and fill the canister up with dessicant or cat litter? I was looking at the motorguard m-30 at the welding store today..... they were out so I did not purchase it.... am wanting to mount the filter straight on my cart next to the welder....

The m30 has bottom inlet/outlets, the m60 is on top.

If you go with the whole house filter, make sure you keep the PSI right. I would lower air, hook up and raise it and only use on the plasma so you don't forget and run it over its rating.

I have found them for the same price, but not free shipping, this is the way to go. I will get one once I check out the in and outlet size, if 1/4", sold.

Have you dried one out, how if so, then it change color or you just wing it?

The M30 is 1/4" npt but the in/out is vertical and at the bottom of the housing (45 cfm).The M45 is a M30 kit with two extra filters. The M60 is 1/2" npt with the in/out horizontal at the top of the housing (100 cfm). The M100 is a M60 kit with two extra filters.
The kit as they call it with two extra filters is the most bang for the buck. I use 1/2" x 1/4" bushings on my M60. The instructions say leave the filter out in the sun for a day to dry it. I have read on other forums that some people use a roll of toilet tissue as a replacement but I've never tried it. My filters don't change color, I just take it out and feel it every now and then.

This must be the filter the paint shops use. I have two friend at two shops and they both told me they use TP rolls for the filter.

I am in Florida, lost of sun to dry them out. So the actual company said that (leave in sun, not install TP), that is cool. I guess have to find a M45 for a good price or adapters for the M60/100. Think I am going to switch over. Maybe worth going for the higher CFM, so do not have to worry about pressure.

The little cheap ones are OK, but do not last long, we have a lot of moisture in the air here.

Is the outer housing metal on the one you have?

Aluminum housing, very strong design, 125psi max. The original filters are way more dense than any tp roll and have a plastic core. The housing crushes them slightly when you put it together and tighten the tee handle until it stops.

This is 1/4 to 1/2 npt? You are using with a 1/4" npt system? I like the higher cfm and bigger 1/2" is gonna help a little too. We might want to break this into its own thread. Would be good info for others.

I used regular plumbing bushings from Lowes to reduce the 1/2"npt down to 1/4"npt and installed a regulator and quick couplings. Although I use 3/8" air hose, the fittings are still 1/4" npt as is normal.

I purchased the M24 from my local welding store. 1/4 in inlet / outlet..... 1 filter..... have not hooked it up yet, but am looking forward to doing so.... get my argon tomorrow, so I am just about ready.... now all I need is 220v hookup.... LOL

Today I hooked up the air dryer and put my welder on a 220v circuit..... not sure if it is the dryer or the extra current, but what a difference.... I am still a little shakey on the plasma cutting..... but it worked a lot better... still have not got any Argon.... but practicing away with the stick welder.....

You can use a speed square as a guide for short cuts and just about anything thin for longer cuts. Just offset it to line up your cut and clamp it down on both ends. Attachment 13065Attachment 13066Attachment 13067
The faster you cut without skipping, the cleaner the cut will be. Always make a dry run before you pull the trigger.

Thanks for the advice. I noticed your guide and the attachment to your cutter. Did you make that? I have a spring like thing on the front of mine. Not sure if that is supposed to make contact with my piece..... right now, I tend to go too quickly..... once I get over the fear.... I will be alright.... would like to make some templates and attempt to cut my name out of some sheet metal.... I have attached a photo showing how I mounted my dryer to my cart.... it worked out pretty nice and makes an easy way to change out the air to Argon too... if I ever get some Argon I shall prove it.... LOL!

I bought the roller guide on ebay. I just bend a wire to cut circles. The wire standoff on your torch rides against the part you're cutting. You can slide it against a straight edge just the same.

Must have figured it out. Now they are selling for $106.65 minus 10% if you give up your email for your 1st purchase. I think I got mine for about $80. I'll have to check.
