Which power connections should I use for the plasma 50P?

I just would like to know if its a 220v 50amp plug or 110v 15 amp plug. At what amperage should I protect the unit ,is it 40 because its name plate says IMAX = 39 amps, but the power cord supplied and connected to the back of the unit is only 14 gauge which is rated for 15 amps.

Is there any internal protection built in to protect the unit at 40amps? Could I put a 50 amp plug on the cord connected to the plasma cutter, my only welder outlet is protected at 50 amps. I'd say no!

What is everyone else doing with there's? Thank you, Justin

The NEC in section 630 covers this. You size the breaker for the inrush (I1max) and derate the size of the wiring according to the duty cycle of the machine versus the operating, rated amps (I1eff). You'll have to follow your local codes though.

Thank you! I think I'll just install a small disconnect with a 40 amp breaker. Hard wired to the plasma cutter cart and with a larger cord running to the 50 amp receptacle. I'm only doing this because each location that I use the cutter already has a 50 amp receptacle protected at 50 amps, and I don't want to swap out breakers or install additional receptacles.

That will work just fine, but the breaker in your panel is to protect your wiring from the panel, so the 40 amp is not required. The unit has protection in the switch as well. But if it does not cost a lot for you it will not hurt. Extra safety but another point on contact the can fail later on.

I've always found it odd that welders dont have the same requirements as most large home appliances. All peices of hvac equipment will clearly state minimum circuit ampacity and max fuse/breaker. I think all appliances over 10 amps should be labeled simiarly.

There is a name plate with most of that info, but it follows for of an international style with some things defined with symbols or abbreviations.

All of our units have the power requirements labeled on the back or side of the case. It's silk screened on the units.

"I" is the current, a common thing for people that work with amps or E/power.

All welders by law have to have it stated on the panel somewhere. Ours are stated in correct terms and language required.
