I have an older Swedish Kohlswa anvil , it has some chips on the edges of the top plate wondering if this rod would work for repair.

I'm sure that rod would work fine, but I would have more concerns about the base metal. Any idea of the alloy, carbon content, or hardness? It might require a ton of pre-heat and post welding heat stress relieving to keep from hardening the base metal at the edge of the HAZ. Otherwise you might just create new larger chips to repair.
Not really sure of the base material for the plate, I know they set them in the mold before they were cast in Sweden. Some of the guys on the anvil forums have welded them up with stick and reground. One of the Everlast forum members i believe blacksmith ?? might have more info.
If its a good anvil, the hammering face should be a heat treated spring steel. The rest of the anvil should be a good quality steel, and the whole top half of the anvil is heat treated. If you do any welding on it, you will need to have it heat treated again, otherwise it will be soft and won't spring back from the hammer blows.

As for the welding, I think you are talking about Stellite 21 , not Stoodite. I you are just fixing some chips there will not be too much of an issue in localized areas if you have ductal material. If the anvil is martensitic steel and not preheated, you may have some issues.
No its Stoodite 21, Used it years back for repairing punch and die sets, was just curious if anyone had used it on an anvil. i will just use the same method as i have for years cleaning and pre heating to approx 400-500 deg F before welding. Used to do a brinell hardness test years ago to get a reading , then soften the material to do the repair and harden to the previous spec.
