Still need to practice (alot). Need to work on consistency. Now that I have a very good tig machine, I can concentrate on becoming a better welder.
I think I still want to upgrade the torch, but that will have to wait until the $$ is available.:mad:

What filler rod did you use?
Its hard to tell from the picture, but it looks like you might have a "cold" weld, where where the puddle was not hot enough and the filler is sitting on top of the base metals instead of the base being welded together and then the filler rod used.
Lots if consistency problems that beginners have is from not using enough heat, and not letting the weld puddle penetrate into the base metals enough.
Keep at it. It takes time and practice!

I've heard when doing aluminum, wait until the puddle is shinny, then start adding filler.
Is that the same technic for steel? I don't want to burn through.
Yes, the filler will cool the puddle when you dip. Add filler just as the puddle starts to keyhole at the front.Quote:

It's going in my 1946 FOrd Coupe I'm re-doing. Was a street rod for 20+ years, now building a street/strip version.

Made me realize how much I love the sport. I don't have the time to field a full blown strip car, so the coupe is going to be a street/strip toy.
