Just got my 225LX

Purchased and received ( finally ) a power tig 225 LX. Initial impressions are good, machine seems to work well. I do not like how the arc starts due to the rush of argon but is easy enough to work around. The torch is foreign to me, I think it is supposed to be the economy WP18 but I have no idea, none of the WP18 cups/nozzles I have fit? It is NOT the European style torch, it has a all black handle and came with 2 number 4 cups. I want to get another torch for it but the Everlast website just shows a generic picture of then WP20 torch they offer with no real details, does anyone know if it has a gas lense? And how it compares in size to the torch that I got? I am looking to go the CK route but if the everlast has a viable plug and play option then I will consider it. I usually use a Speedway torch and have used Weldcraft products as well. I have never welded without a gas lense and the arc wander is killing me. If it helps I bought the my welder and torch cooler from Alex in California, I guess location makes a difference of what torch you get?

Make sure you don't have a 20 series. I imagine that is what you have. It is listed on the side of the neck.

Just put on a smidge of preflow so the arc starts after the blast. Another guy here likes to bump the peddle to get the argon going and then start to weld, but I've gotten use to the short delay starting. It really makes a difference; just a nice "click" and there's your arc right where you want it. Also get some less flexible, as short as tolerable, and as small an ID line as you can manage and you'll get less blast. IIRC the everlast supplied line is 5/16 ID and I'm using 1/4" which was supplied with my air liquide regulator. That's less than half the volume.

The side of the torch says SR18, it seems that WP17 components fit it though?? I am actually taking a break from welding at the moment, all of my welds on stainless tubing are very dark, like I have insufficient gas coverage? I tried adjusting flow both up and down with no change, I have confirmed the gas is flowing from the cup. I am still using the #4 cup so I turned the Amperage way down to see if that made a difference, it was very slight. I adjusted travel speed, torch angle, arc length, ect. and it stays the same. Changed out my tungsten to 2% thoriated and still no change? I suspect that the #4 cup is to blame as I can jump right on to the Lincoln 185, same argon, same tungsten and get proper welds, only difference being the torches and cups. Anyone else have this experience??

17, 18, 26 = same consumables.
9, 20 = same consumables.

Yes, you need a larger cup for stainless.

The prefix isn't important as the number. All 17, 26, and 18 interchange. IF your 17 cons fit and you have an 18 torch on your Lincoln and they won't fit our 18 you need to make sure YOUR existing torch is compatable with everything else. IF our 18 fits your 17 cons, it's not our torch that is the issue. Because as I said, the 17, 26, and 18 are typically universally interchangeble.
Arc wander? Are you welding AC and having this happen? What is your AC balance and Frequency? If you are having arc wander, your flow rate may be too high. You need about 4 or 5 for this size cup. But the 4 is too small for GP welding. 5,6 or 7 are better. Maybe the new torch mfgr put together a new consumable package than what we have had in the past.

Gas lenses can be purchased separately.

I am just going to get another torch setup to replace this thing, I will keep it as a spare and get a gas lens for it. The arc wander is minimal, I am spoiled by the fact that I have only ever tig welded with a gas lens and the turbulence is noticeable to me. I did turn down the argon flow but that #4 cup is just a killer on this torch. Does EVERLAST offer a WP20 Torch with a optional gas lens that is "plug and play"? If so does anyone have a photo of it?

Non of our torches come with a gas lens. However, you can purchase one locally for them anywhere.

Picked up a gas lens and #8 cup this morning, WORLD of difference!!! Welds are clean with no oxygen contamination. Everlast retailers should add the $25 it cost for those two parts and include it in the package as standard.

Different materials require different setups. Stainless is more specialty, they provide what will work for mild steel basically. This is true for almost all torch manufacturers. Many don't include anything. Since Everlast is geared towards the hobbyist, it's nice that they include a little something to get started. I would say add a tungsten before adding more torch parts.

Agreed, and for the price of a 3 pack of tungsten they could get that in a package as well. I managed to get some time in today on some Docol R8 tube, it is a alternative to 4130. My machine performed perfectly! So far so good.

Any pics of some samples? I ask cuz I am still trying to figure things out specially with different metals

for this torch I think? Any one know what threads are inside the torch head?

That gas saver kit is for a 2 series torch (9/20) what you need is 3 series (17/18/26). Basically just change the part number from D2xxx to D3xxx to get the same parts kit in your torch size. On the page you linked to, any in the top two groups will fit. However, each group takes a different sized cup thread. The top group is the normal sized cups, and the second group are the large sized cups. You can use any parts that are listed for SR/WP 18, 18, 26 or in CK series 3. The threads are industry standard across brands. For your torch it's 3/8"-32, while the kit you got is 3/8"-24. Hope that helps.
