TIG welding motorcycle clutch parts
So I was hoping to get to this in time for the contest, but with being sick as hell for two weeks and barely getting the bike put back together, I just couldn't carry on yesterday by the time I cleaned up.
My brother has had a rough couple of months, what started as a clutch adjustment turned into replacing the lever (I posted about that) which then led to replacing the cable, adding a Burly easy-pull. This led to a moron overtightening the clutch and causing a failure (more on that in a minute) and in replacing the pipes (had to remove to install the new cable) we found one rusted all the way through. He opted to replace the pipes rather than have a seam, plus he didn't like the sound. I fabricated a new bracket but didn't get to weld or take pics.
So the overtightening of the clutch, combined with 20k miles, caused the double spring plate to shear all the rivets, which caused a locking of the clutch and the need for a new clutch pack. In the process I made a diaphragm clutch tool (lots of lathe, no welding again) and then the pressure plate exploded (cast crap, not weldable).
Wow, long story leading up to the question, sorry, hope it was entertaining for you cause it sucked on this end.
So now I have all these parts floating around and decided to do some sort of metal sculpture to commemorate the series of events. The plates and discs cannot possibly be mild steel, does anyone know what kind of alloy they may be? I'm wagering some sort of high carbon steel, which should give me plenty of grief trying to weld. Any suggestions for filler metal and/or process variation? They're all about 1/16-3/32 thick and will be TIG welded. Primarily butt and lap joints for what I have in mind.
