I was wondering last night, the different sized tungstens; relative to metal thickness, why can't thicker ones be tapered longer? Would this not bring the dimension at the tip down similar to thinner tungsten?

You are on to something,,blunting the end of a tungsten does change it's ability to handle amperage,,,this comparision can be seen on the chart in the CK world wide tech manual..
