I'm getting ready to start on my welding table. I have my 1-1/2" square tubing and saving a little $$$ before I get my plate. I'll probably be using 1/4" thickness. The size will be 3'x6' that's has more to do with my available room. Post some pics of your welding tables!
I'm not sure if you saw my small table build....maybe some ideas there for you, tho yours is going to be much larger. What wall thickness on the square tube? 1/8" should be sufficient, tho 3/16" is more stout. I would plan on getting large casters. I really like my 5" harbor freight casters, tho you might want locking ones with the large table. I like having square corners on my plate so I can use it as a 'square' when assembling things. Make sure your plate top is cut square. I'm sure others will have some good ideas to add.Quote:

X83 I'm sure a fab shop would do it for you. Other than that lay it out your self and use a mag drill.
Actually, the weight of the table, lets it be stabile enough as it is. If I was going to be dragging large pieces over to the table, like you might be doing on your larger table, causing the table to move underneath, that would be aggravating! The table top is going to be really heavy on yours...so not sure if locking casters will be necessary. You could always use wheel chocks when/if you found you wanted more immobility. Note, that only two of my casters are swiveling, at the end with the handle, the other two are fixed. That might make a difference in slipperiness also.Quote:

Sean...You know, I'm imagining your table, and you saying you have a space problem. I think I would want to go with four swiveling, and locking casters, so I could muscle the table sideways into a spot when needed, lock it down. Go with big casters so you can roll it easily.

use standard non locking casters and install 1/2 or bigger long bolts in legs , when in space you want unscrew bolt to raise bench off casters . nice the way you can use the bolts to level the bench Attachment 6851

those casters with the shock absorber are nice...1200 lb capacity each. The ones I have are only 330 lb cap. each....equates to 1320 lbs total load, on my small table. I guess depends on what one expects the table to have to support. If very heavy duty, all materials, casters and up, will have to be beefed up. Maybe a 3/8" top instead of 1/4". Things to consider, along with the budget.Quote:

so how much does everyone usually spend on a top for their table. I sure would like having me a good welding table that dont catch on fire and wont warp and as cheap as possible. Prolly 1/4" would be a good thickness wouldnt it?
on the wheels we have little casters on a welding table and it is so hard to push. Get big ones they prolly work better.

My little table that is 36x30 including the flat of the metal brake surface. I think mine is 1/4. If I used 1/4 on a larger table, I would underbrace it, or it could warp with heat and gravity.
