Powerultra and generator
Hi all i bought a power ultra 250 in October with the intent to use it with a generator to repair my tractor or bushhog in the field. My generator is a MEP-003 10,000 watt with a onan 4 cyl. engine. the first few times i used it all was good and then one day i burned one rod and it stopped the red light was on so i let it set for about 20 min. the light stayed on when i cut it off and back on there was a loud pop and the display flashed. well since then i have a new unit but a little uneasy about the generator thing. I still would like to talk to ray to find out what happened. My question now is what is the min. generator i can use (i guess it would depend on what voltage is being used i know bigger is better) and does it matter if it has a idle control or not. I know i read someone was using a 7000 watt in another post in the field i would need no more than 80 amps at most this is stick. Thanks for any help with this.

Cpenni,
If you read, we say "clean" power..That means a clean pure sine wave, with LESS than 10% deviation. AND definitely an idle control will blow it up since hertz and likely voltage are low when the unit fires up (or attempts to). SeanMurhpy is using a 7k I think but it IS clean. I doubt yours is... or you were using it on an auto idle thing. Now, I tell customers, if you wouldn't plug your brand new computer into it, don't plug the welder into it.

yes it is clean power I've had a scope on it. the idle is steady at 1800 and 60hz when the power is out i use it to run my big screen and computers but it is a big unit 1300 lbs. and would like to buy something more portable.
