low end on PP 256 in tig mode

I was playing with the low end on some al. pop cans the other night and couldn't weld without burning holes.

The readout shows 24 with the knob turned to the bottom stop. For pop tin thickness it would be nice to go down to around 10-12 amps. My PU 205 goes down this low.

What should the lowest possible amp setting be on the PP256?

I see Jody did some nice welds on pop cans with his EX 256 @ around 10 amps.

This should be adjustable. Is it something you just noticed? Or is it something that just occurred that you can confirm? Have you tried it in DC as well? Were you using the foot pedal? Have you tried it with just the torch switch with 2T/4T?

Also, do you have your start amps all the way down?

For the low setting, no I haven't tried it in dc mode, just ac. I have the start amp knob turned down as far as it will go. I've tried it with both the foot pedal and the switch,
2T and 4T settings but 24- 25 amps is the lowest number I can get.

This is the first time I've tried to weld at the low end with this welder, so this is something I have just noticed.
The welder works perfectly otherwise, just won't turn down quite low enough to weld pop cans.

How is the adjustment done?

I'm interested in this as well. The lowest mine goes down to is 29 in AC, and 11 in DC.

I think there is a bit of a misunderstanding with the units. The 250EX has the lower amps in AC mode @ 5 amps . the PowerPro is a low of 5 amps in DC mode

This is why I asked about DC performance. The 256 has 20 amp AC and 5 amp DC, (plus or minus an amp or two).

looks like I'll have to buy an ex 250 if I want to weld pop cans!

Seriously, 24 amps is actually low enough for any practical welding I will ever need to do



I'm away from home for a few days right now, will try the DC low end when I get back.

Is there an adjustment for this? I'm at 29 AC and 11 DC. My unit arrived damaged in shipment. The front bezel was destroyed and the metal case bashed in. I had to supper glue the bezel back together so that it would give some support to the cable jacks on the bottom. I've mailed Ray a couple times about a replacement, but have not heard back yet.

Is there a service manual? I'm happy to whip out my multimeter and o-scope to get it back in spec.

Ray isn't in warranty. He is in technical service. If you received a damaged panel then you should contact ext 202.

Thanks. I've give a call. When I first received the welder, Ray was quite helpful in walking me through an internal visual inspection. Once he was satisfied nothing obvious was broken, I put it back together and fired it up. He said to give him a yell once it looked like it was working.

I'm still curious if there is a service manual available.

Mark, Talked to Katia (sp?) about the bezel. I already have the UPS shipping notice for it! That was quick. :)
