Project #4 from EmptyNester - Make a HF roller work

Everybody knows that its hard to beat the price of stuff at HF. Some of the stuff is better than others.

I got a roller stand for wood working. The base assembly is very poorly done. The first time I used it, it fell apart. I've had spotty success with it as it seems to work only about 1/2 the time.

Given that it wasn't all that great, I figured I didn't have a lot to lose if I wrecked in in trying to improve it.

So, I ground the paint off and welded the base to the legs.

It was really had to get a good ground. I had to put the ground clamp on the opposite side of the leg I was welding. The other thing that was interesting is that the paint near where I was welding would catch on fire. It would go out fast, but I'm sure the fumes weren't good.

I'd say the fix was a success as I know that I can use it now without it falling apart.

I had a similar issue with a HF roller seat (they don't sell it anymore, and the one they have now doesn't have a good tray)

Just don't get any of those flames near your Hovercraft project, I'm not so sure they will go out as fast....

What caused it to fall apart ? I have four HF roller stands I use with my cabinet saw and band saw, they all feel solid... no problems at all.

The base tube attaches to the leg using a hex head machine screw that goes up from the bottom of the base tube to a small threaded rod that slides into a hole in the leg. (If you've seen it, it should make sense.)

The rod in the leg is barely bigger than the width of the leg, so any lateral motion causes the rod to slide half way out.

I thought that would be a problem when I assembled mine but it hasn't yet. Maybe I haven't put as much weight on mine... yet.
