New to TIG welding

My name is Phil Guzman. and I am situated in Kansas. My current project is putting a 1965 XKE coupe together. I have also been known to mess around with 1960's (usually english) motorcycles.
I started welding Oxy/Acetylene around 1947, then added Mig around 1989. I just bought a 200LX and have been practicing laying beads on steel for the last month or so. Does anybody have any tips on a good method to control the distance from the weld puddle to the tungsten?? I am Planning to try laying beads on aluminum this week. That should prove interesting!!!

I usually rest the side of the heel of my palm on the workpiece or on something stable if possible. Sometimes there isn't any thing to rest on close to the weld, and an elbow up against the wall or even just tucked into your side o on your hip bone can help.

I have a 200DX. You note 200 LX. Is that correct (LX)? If do, where did you get it?

If you search the internet for "TIG finger" or search our forum. They are handy and allow you to use the pinky or other fingers to guide your weld. They sell them on weldingtipsandtricks.com I have one, but loose it and find it all the time. Might want to get a couple. You can also probably make one.

Are you using the WP18 torch? If so, another option is to get a smaller WP20 torch. Once you use the WP20, the 18 will collect some dust.

The palm on the table is the easiest thing to try, but the aluminum might get a little warm. Also, what type gloves are you using? Tillman TIG gloves give a really good feel (I like the 25 series) and they are $8 a pair.

Attach it to the cuff of your welding glove with a short piece of kevlar thread (long enough to let you get it over a finger with it attached) and it is handily hanging there when you need it or you can tuck it in the cuff of the glove.

I like to hold the torch similar to a pencil and then rest a finger or two on the table or work piece for stability. If you hold the torch too close the end of the cup, it can make your fingers nice and toasty.
