My original question was (Which filler rod to use for welding 304 stainless to mild steel?) but I think there needs to be a spot for noobs and pros to chime in on what they like to use for specific applications.

For stainless steel filler rod selection, check out the filler rod selection chart on page 10 of the stainless steel welding manual (published on a stainless steel industry trade group's web site) here:

(Quick answer: 309L is great for joining mild steel to stainless. 309 is known as a good filler rod for welding "dissimilar" ferrous metals).

312 also works, but 309L is probably the best choice. I usually use 312 for odd ball jobs involving alloy steels and high carbon steels. It makes one hell of a strong weld.
