Tacoma front receiver project

Hey guys. Here's some pics of a work in progress. We didnt get to finish because my welder decided to make some horrific noises, shoot sparks, and catch on fire :mad: He's planning on using a 8-10,000lb winch on a tray so he can use it in the front or rear of his truck. I think my tig welds are getting much better :D Ill post the rest after I get my unit back and we get it finished up.

what happened with the welder? make some horrific noises, shoot sparks, and catch on fire did this happen to the PP205

I have a front mount on one of my Avalanches [centered like yours], and TWO of them [where the snatch hooks used to be] on the ZR2 Blazer. I love it. A secondary benefit; if you hook a trailer to it and push the trailer into a parking spot or location, it can be done accurately at about 30MPH. It is a completely different thing driving a trailer into a spot instead of backing up. It is a GIANT and expensive pain in the ### to run the #0 wiring to the rear of the truck for that winch. Consider welding connectors to make life quick and easy. You'll need two males and four females....
DO not take the shortcut of using the frame as a ground point. If you do and your solenoid goes out on the winch, you're done. If you run both ground and power, and the solenoid goes out, you just bypass the solenoid, wire directly to the winch [ a small premade jumper is nice] and switch terminals. Kind of a positive ground thing to reverse direction of the winch.

I have a video on youtube [it's stupid, I won't give you the address] showing me pulling a Jeep and new Ford truck out of the desert with my silly little Blazer and it's winch. The funny thing; the Jeep had a winch and the forerunner that was there with us had a winch, neither wired up. BOTH people, and the entire group that had gathered, WERE TOO STUPID TO USE JUMPER CABLES TO ACTIVATE THE WINCH.

It was my 205... The thing didnt burst into flames, but it was a small fire on the inside nonetheless. The noises were so loud my neighbor came outside to see what happened! Sounded like huge popping electircal arc's. Hopefully its just a fluke unit... not really thrilled about spending all my welding earnings on shipping to/from Everlast.

Thanks for the tip's duckface, I will let my bud know since that's his truck. Mine has a integrated winch in the bumper and sportin dual batt's :)

It looks bad there, no doubt. I haven't seen a failure like that. Looks like an IGBT or two or three?

Normally, if you loose an IGBT, it will take out the other which might take them all out. So things look real bad because of that. With the power they pump out, if there is a failure, there will be smoke and noise in most cases.

I've not seen one like that as well, but Eric's guys will get you up and running.

Krookz, No problem, yours is a bad one for sure, no one we can do on the phone like normal

Receiver looks great. You have a LOT more patience than I do with welding. That is too much welding for me to even consider TIG, especially since the bumper cover hides ALL of your fantastic and laborious welds. Keep up the good work.

You may want to consider adding some gussets or re-enforcement of some sort from the backside of the reciever tube to the mounting plate. Since the reciever hole centerline is about 3-3.5" above the attachment point of the mount there will be a lot of force against that weld in the rear. A 1/4" plate from the top of the mounting plate bent and lap welded to the top of the reciever tube will greatly reduce the possibility of a failure.

Thanks man. We do have plans to gusset, and add a brace on each side to the frame.

Finally heard back on my 205... they cant find it! :confused:
