It is the TIG welding process that requires a welder to use a tungsten electrode. The tungsten electrode is for its electrode made of the tungsten metal, one that is capable of withstanding the highest in heats for all metals. The TIG welding process will incorporate the electrode and the electrode will not disintegrate while welding the source material. This non-consumable electrode usually has filler metals and a shielding gas that will protect the weld source as it is being worked on. That is the very basics in the TIG welding process or procedure.
But, when using the pulsed TIG equipment, there is a slight difference in the way that the source material is welded. There are several other process modifications, such as: the hot wire, dabber, and the pulsed-current processes. The hot wire uses a filler metal is heat resistant and is brought to the to the weld pool right before it reaches the melting point. The dabber process is used to place petite welds on slim edges of the source material. The pulse-current method is when the current fluctuates between two different current speeds.
The pulse-current method has two different current levels. The current level known for its higher speed is called the pulse current. The current level that is lower in speed is called the background current speed setting. When the metal is being heated, it is usually done by the current speed. Once it is heated, melting occurs and it becomes fused. After the metal has been heated, the background current is used to cool off the metal. The background current is also used to congeal or harden the molten metal.
The pulsed TIG equipment has gone through many developments including the introduction of electronic controls or wave forms. They are designed for the arc, in that they will keep the weld cool and bring the highest of quality to the weld site. The weld site or joint will hold its quality if it is protected while being welded, which is what the dual current actually does. It will use the pulse current to weld the joint and the background current to protect it while it cools off.
The electronic controls for the power supply unit are (AC) alternating current or (DC) direct current. Both will bring about different results to the welded source material, but the DC current will most likely bring better control to the molten puddle. This current usually wont cause the surface to overheat. The AC current will evenly distribute the heat to the electrode, bringing about the desired penetration and width to the weld.
All in all, the pulsed TIG equipment as with any other equipment, the operator must ensure that the proper specifications are used when purchasing. The proper specifications must be used when purchasing the accessories and any other equipment that may be needed.
