What You Should Know About Stick Welding

April 26th, 2009

If you need heavy duty welding done such as steel construction for building or even for machinery repair, you should look for a stick welder. The stick welding process is one of the most popular of them all. This procedure actually makes close to all of the welding done in some countries.

Those who are looking for welders are usually hiring officials in the construction industry. There are some that are sought out for many other industries like manufacturing positions too. The stick welding process is one that will be around for many years to come. There is a need for those that can stick weld in places a machine cannot.

It is the stick welding process that is uncomplicated in how it is done and the equipment needed is very easy to find. This process is mainly for those who need to weld iron products or steel metals, in order to gain the manufactured product they seek.

This process is one that mainly requires two pieces of equipment, a power supply unit and an electrode. The power supply unit is very necessary because it will bring the heat to the surface being worked on. This unit will deliver constant current to the electrode and to the source, increasing the depth of the weld. This unit must carry electricity or the heat to the torch. The torch is what the welder holds and uses to weld the source material.

This unit or power supply cannot work without an electrode. The electrode is important in that it will help to weld the material by giving off gases and other chemicals to help keep the weld clean. Electrodes are designed to dissolve quickly so that they can protect the welded source. They will give off gases and other chemicals that can be chipped away later. This chipping away will usually occur after the welded source material has cooled.

The source material will be considered a defect, if not for the chemical shelter that the electrodes bring to their surface. The air for one is not good because it will cause the product to be ruined and therefore make it will not be unusable. These gases that the electrode bring are called shielding gases. These gases are made up of a flux chemical that once melted will produce the slag that’s chipped away after cooling.

Those who work with this type of welding procedure or the stick welding process, must consider all safety measures involved. They must make sure they wear welding gloves and long sleeved clothing. They must make sure that they wear a welding helmet, those that protect their eyes from the UV or ultraviolet rays are the safest of them all.

As with any other profession, you must use all safety precautions as you were trained on the job or in class. You must think of your safety before you turn on that torch, making sure that you are wearing all protective equipment, ensuring that as you perform your stick weld, you are doing it proficiently and securely.
