What Are The Must Haves In Welding Gear?

May 1st, 2009

The welder’s profession is one that can be most satisfying, after you have created the finished product exactly as you wanted. But, you have to ensure that you are meeting or exceeding all safety standards, while you are performing your job. You must make sure that you are keeping your body and eyes safe while you are working.

It is your welding gear that will help keep you from harming yourself, whilst you are doing what you love. Your welding gear is just as imperative to your position, almost as much as your actual welding equipment. Your welding gear has several pieces that most welders use.

Those pieces of equipment are:

· Welding helmets or goggles

· Safety shoes

· Leathers

· Gloves

They are the ‘must haves’ before you strike up that torch and begin your weld crafting. The welding helmets or goggles are used to protect your eyes. The helmet might come with an adjustable strap, so that you can have it customized to fit your head. This helmet will not do you any good welding, if it actually slips on your head while you have the molten metal in an uncompromising position. The goggles or helmet must have lens that are able to repel the UV or ultraviolet rays that come from welding.

These rays can cause damage to the cornea or retinas of your eyes. These types of injuries can be damaging either momentarily or permanently. These types of injuries are the fear of any welder and all must take out the time to secure your goggles or welding helmets before you begin.

The safety shoes are another welding accessory that the welder must wear while working. These shoes need to have a steel toe to protect the welder’s feet. It is best if your boots are made to resist even the weather. If at all possible get boots that are made exclusively for ironworkers. You can ask your boot shop owner for those that are made for steelworkers and the most famous in brand names. If you have purchased any of the top brands, you are guaranteed shoe safety for a metal worker.

The leathers are in a class by themselves, they can be several items including; sleeves, aprons, jackets, chaps or boot covers. The leathers are there to protect your clothing from burns. If you wear the leathers, they will save you in clothing costs and burns to your body.

The welder’s gloves are part of the leathers, but deserve their own category. The welder’s gloves can be a pair that is multipurpose, but you can also buy those specifically for your type of welding process. The welder’s gloves are usually reinforced or doubly coated in material to improve protection to the welder. These gloves also have to be made to not restrict the wearer, because they need as much dexterity as possible.

It is best that the welder inspect them thoroughly before beginning any project. As will all pieces of welding gear, because if there are any defects to the equipment the welder may suffer from using the product. Any welding gear must serve its purpose fully in order to create a safe work environment for the welder.
